The Phillies were absolutely embarrassed by the Nationals this afternoon to finish their visit to Nationals Park. A day after holding on to beat the Nats and hamper their long-shot playoff hopes, the Phillies were smacked around, as they fell 11 to 2.
Tyler Cloyd made the start for the Phillies and was thoroughly hit around in his four innings of work. Cloyd allowed five runs in the outing, as he surrendered ten hits to the Nats. Cloyd allowed his fifth run after coming out to start the fifth inning and failing to record an out.
J.C Ramirez came on to throw the next two innings and allowed another Nationals run. Joe Savery started the seventh and was crushed, allowing four runs while recording only one out. Mauricio Robles would spell Savery, as the Nationals notched their eleventh run of the day off of him. Luis Garcia threw a scoreless eighth to keep the insurmountable deficit where it was, as he oddly enough surrendered the first walk to the Nationals all day. Seriously, they had eighteen hits but only one walk, kind of odd.
The Phillies took the lead early on two separate occasions, opening the scoring in the second on a Kevin Frandsen sacrifice fly. After the Nationals tied things in the bottom of the frame, the Phillies regained the lead in the third on and RBI groundout by Chase Utley. It would be all downhill from there, as the Nats took the lead in the fourth and never looked back. The loss was the Phillies 80th of the season.
The Phillies will now head home to Citizens Bank Park to face the Marlins. Cliff Lee will take the hill for the Phillies.
