Phillies Lose to D-II University of Tampa (Seriously)

The Phillies kicked off MLB Spring Training Sunday afternoon with a matchup against University of Tampa, the nation's top-ranked Division II team.

In true Phillies fashion, they managed to lose the game (albeit without any every day players in the lineup) in embarrassing fashion, 6-2.

Things started off relatively well for the group of Phillies' Spring Training invitees, as they took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second. Russ Canzler and Aaron Altherr hit back-to-back doubles with one out to bring home the first run of the game. Altherr would come around to score on a throwing error later in the inning.

Tampa took back one run in the sixth when Andrew Amaro (nephew of Phillies GM Ruben Amaro Jr.) came around to score on a single, but it would not be until the seventh that the shit would hit the fan.

Amaro would draw a walk with two outs and the bases loaded in the top of the seventh to tie the game at 2-2, and then it would get really ugly. Hector Neris would replace Nefi Ogando on the mound for the Phillies, and Giovanny Alfonzo would take just his third pitch to left for a grand slam to put Tampa ahead 6-2.

I guess you can take solace in the fact that Tampa is a solid program that has won six national championships, produced 71 MLB Draft picks, 73 All-Americans, seven players who advanced to the MLB level and made 29 NCAA tournament appearances.

Yeah, I still don't feel any better.

Buckle up folks, it's going to be a loooooooooooong season.

The Phillies play their first Grapefruit League game on Tuesday against the Yankees.

For who? My teammates. For what? To win.
