Whelp, the Phillies lost to the Double A Mets today in front of all 1,000 Mets fans on the planet. Clearly the only All Stars left in the Citi Field locker room were Cliff Lee and Dom Brown, but since it wasn't Cliff's turn to pitch and Dom didn't have his best day, the Phillies lost 5 to 4.
Cole Hamels got the start on the mound and continued to struggle as he has much of the season. After being spotted a one run lead in the first, Hamels immediately surrendered three runs in the bottom half of the inning. For the day Hamels tossed only five innings while allowing four runs and striking out five. J.C. Ramirez came on for the sixth, allowing one more run before Jake Diekman recorded one out in the seventh and Luis Garcia tossed an inning and a third of scoreless ball. With a man on second and two outs in the eighth, Antonio Bastardo came on to notch the final out of the inning.
The Phillies offense wasn't very impressive between innings two and eight, despite chasing the Mets starter after four and two-thirds innings. The day seemed like it would go well at the start, with Jimmy Rollins leading off the game with a home run, one day after the team scored 13 runs. The Phillies scored in the fifth, as Chase Utley hit a sacrifice fly to score Hamels, before slumbering until the ninth. After Michael Young reached on a fielding error in the ninth things got a bit interesting, as Utley clubbed his thirteenth home run of the season. Dom Brown followed that up with a double before the Mets finally ended the game, winning 5 to 4.
The Phillies will now head into tomorrow afternoons contest looking to take the series two to one. Tomorrow's series finale is set up to be a pitchers duel, as All Stars Cliff Lee and Matt Harvey will make the start for their respective squads. So the Phillies lost today, but you know what they say, every dog (or Mutt) has its day.
