Phillies Shut Out by Niese, Mets

The Phillies returned to playing more like they have all season tonight, as they were shut out by the Mets 5 to 0. The offense was virtually non-existent for the Phillies as the Mets snapped the Phillies two game winning streak. The win for the Mets also snapped their own five game losing streak, as they pulled even to one win apiece in this four game set with the Phillies.
Kyle Kendrick made the start for the Phillies and wasn't at his best. Kendrick managed to keep the score at 1 to 0 Mets until the disastrous sixth inning for the Phillies. After the leadoff batter singled to start the sixth for the Mets, a Kevin Frandsen throwing error allowed runners to be on second and third with no outs. Kendrick recorded an out before intentionally walking the bases loaded. The Mets scored their second run of the game on a sacrifice fly with the help of a terrible Roger Bernadina throw. Kendrick then intentionally walked another batter to load the bases once more and bring pitcher Jon Niese to the plate with two outs. Niese worked a full count before knocking a bases clearing double to pad the Mets lead to 5 to 0.

In all, Kendrick tossed six innings and only allowed five hits. With the help of four walks and one costly Frandsen error, the Mets were able to tally five runs on him however, albeit only one earned. Zach Miner and Justin De Fratus tossed a scoreless seventh and eighth respectively, but the game was all but sealed for the Mets with a lackluster Phillies offense.

The Phillies offense managed only three hits all game as Jon Niese shut them out. Jimmy Rollins was 1 for 3 on the evening and also collected the Phillies only walk with two outs in the ninth. Michael Young had a 2 for 3 night at the plate that included his 22nd double of the season, but with no further signs of life, the Phillies were shut down.

The Phillies will look to bounce back tomorrow in game three of this four game set at Citi Field. Cole Hamels will make the start for the Phillies against Daisuke Matsuzaka.

For who? My teammates. For what? To win.
