Entering Sunday, Phillies starter Sean O'Sullivan had not won a Major League game since May 12, 2011. The Phillies entered the game looking to do something they hadn't done for a bit of time as well, string together five wins.
Sunday afternoon, O'Sullivan would find his way back into the win column, tossing six shutout innings to help propel the Phillies to a 6-0 win and sweep over the Diamondbacks. |
Cesar Hernandez led off the second inning with a double and would come around to score two batters later on a sacrifice fly by Cameron Rupp, giving O'Sullivan an early lead to work with.
O'Sullivan would scuffle a bit in the third, allowing a single to lead off the inning before eventually allowing what was initially ruled as an RBI single with two outs in the inning. The Phillies would successfully challenge the ruling at first, however, and the call on the field was changed to an inning-ending out.
O'Sullivan would settle in from there, retiring eight straight batters as the Phillies offense began to do more damage.
Darin Ruf would homer to start the bottom of the fourth, and the Phillies would begin to open things up a bit in the sixth. Maikel Franco would hit a two-out triple off the top of the center field wall in the sixth to bring Ruf around to score and Hernandez would follow that with a double to bring Franco home and give the Phillies a 4-0 lead.
Things would continue to go the Phillies' way in the eighth, as Franco hit his first Major League home run on the first pitch of the inning (video below). Ben Revere would single home one more in the inning, and the Phillies would walk away with a 6-0 win and a series sweep over the D-Backs.
Up next: The Phillies will now travel to Colorado to open up a four-game series with the Rockies and a 10-game road stretch.
