The Phillies were swept by the Cardinals for the first time since 2006 when they lost 3 to 1 tonight. To put that in perspective, the last time the Phillies were swept by the Cardinals, I was 15, people still used mySpace (not me, way too cool for that) and the Phillies were still two years from being World Champions for the second time in their history.
Kyle Kendrick received the start tonight and gave a valiant effort on the mound, only to see it squandered yet again by an offense as powerful as a tee-ball team. Kendrick tossed six innings while allowing three runs on five hits. Antonio Bastardo took over after that and continued to be one of the only bright spots in the Phillies bullpen. Bastardo tossed a perfect seventh and eighth inning while striking out three.
The summary of the offense won't take long. Since scoring thirteen runs last Friday, the Phillies have scored only nine runs in five games and have not held a lead since the first inning of Saturday's game against the Mets. Jimmy Rollins, John Mayberry Jr. and Erik Kratz each collected two hits in the game. The Phillies only run came courtesy of an Erik Kratz RBI single in the fourth inning. So after yet another terrible offensive display, the Phillies have now dropped five games in a row.
The Phillies will now head to the city of Detroit to face the Tigers. Cole Hamels will get the start as the Phillies desperately look to get back on track.
