In what could be his final home start as a member of the Phillies, Roy Halladay looked very solid, as he led the team to victory over the lowly Marlins. Halladay will be a free agent following the season and after being plagued by injuries the past two seasons, the 36-year old may not receive the kind of offers that seemed so assured just a short two seasons ago. While his velocity is down and his typical pinpoint command has all but disappeared, Halladay showed that he still has the ability to grind out a solid outing and adjust to get the win, as the Phillies won 6 to 4.
Halladay tossed six innings in the start, allowing only a single run to the Marlins. It feels odd to say this about Halladay considering his career, but he walked three batters while only striking out two. While his command was not what it used to be, Halladay showed the determination that has made him a spectacular pitcher throughout his career, as he adjusted and allowed only four hits in the outing.
Justin De Fratus came on for the seventh and held the Marlins scoreless, allowing only one hit. B.J. Rosenberg came on to start the seventh and was hit around a bit after looking solid as of late. Rosenberg allowed two runs while recording two outs in the inning before Jake Diekman came on to finish out the frame. Jonathan Papelbon came on in the ninth and allowed one run on three hits, but still collected his 28th save of the season, as the Phillies yet again avoided loss number 81 on the season.
The Phillies grabbed the lead in the third when they laced four straight singles with one out. Following singles by Cesar Hernandez and Jimmy Rollins, Chase Utley added a single of his own to plate the first run of the game. Carlos Ruiz followed that up with yet another single, as Rollins and Utley both crossed home plate.
The Marlins would score one in the fifth, but the Phillies would take it back and then some, as they scored three in the bottom of the frame. Chase Utley hit a home run for the second night in a row, as he cracked his eighteenth of the season, a three-run shot to right.
The Phillies bullpen would hold on to the lead afforded them and the Phillies would win their second in a row.
The Phillies will close out their series against the Marlins tonight as Zach Miner takes the hill.
