The Phillies topped the Giants by a score of 7 to 3 tonight to snap a season high eight-game losing streak. In a shocking turn of events, the offense actually showed up tonight to back up some solid pitching.
John “Despicable Me” Lannan got the starting nod for a struggling Phillies squad and pitched a good game. Lannan tossed seven innings, scattering three runs on seven hits. Antonio Bastardo came on in eighth and pitched a scoreless inning, allowing one hit. Justin De Fratus came on in the non-save situation in the ninth and finished things off for the Phillies.
The offense finally showed back up for the Phillies after an eight-game hiatus. The Phillies tied the game in the bottom of the first on a Delmon Young single and took the lead on a John Mayberry Jr. bases loaded walk. After the Giants tied things up in the third, Carlos Ruiz hit a two run home run, his first of the season, to put the Phillies on top 4 to 2. Michael Young added a two run home run of his own in the sixth and Mayberry an RBI double in the seventh as the Phillies cruised to a 7 to 3 victory.
Entering the night 11.5 games out of the division lead, there is little hope left for the Phillies making the playoffs, but with a solid night from some of their trade-bait, they may have put themselves in a better position to rebuild before tomorrows 4 p.m. deadline. Michael Young, the Phillies most eligible trade piece was 2 for 4 with a home run on the evening. Chase Utley, Delmon Young and John Mayberry Jr. each collected two hits as well, while Carlos Ruiz went 1 for 4 with his first home run of the year.
So the losing streak has ended, the Phillies have won. They will be back in action tomorrow evening against the Giants, with Kyle Kendrick getting the start. The real action however, will come by 4 p.m. tomorrow as the trade deadline draws near. Will the Phillies make the key moves to rebuild?
