Ryan Howard came through in the clutch Tuesday night.

In a season full of disappointments for the veteran first baseman, including benchings, trade talk and even rumors of his release, Howard was able to put that all behind him on Tuesday night, if only for a few hours.

A two-out single by the former MVP would bring this marathon contest to an end, as the Phillies topped the Astros 2-1 in 15 innings.

Howard gave the Phillies the lead early, when the first baseman led off the second inning with a home run to left center field, his 17th of the season.

From there, Phillies starter Kyle Kendrick would turn in a gem, holding the Astros scoreless until the seventh inning.

Kendrick would exit with the game tied after seven frames, having allowed just one run on five hits.

Both teams' bullpens would go into lockdown mode from there, drawing this one out until the 15th inning.

After Hector Neris tossed a perfect 15th for the Phillies in his Major League debut, Grady Sizemore led off the bottom of the frame with a single to put the winning run on base.

Sizemore would be moved into scoring position on a sacrifice bunt by Ben Revere, but Jimmy Rollins would then fly out for the second out of the inning.

With two outs and first base open, the Astros would choose to intentionally walk Chase Utley, bringing Howard to the plate.

Howard would single to right on the fourth pitch of the at-bat, bringing Sizemore around to score and give the Phillies a 2-1 win.

For who? My teammates. For what? To win.
