The Phillies finally scored some runs for interim manager Ryne Sandberg today, giving him his first win as a major league manager. It wasn't even close to a pretty effort, but the Phillies won on an error in the ninth, which is probably the only way they can win these days.
Cole Hamels took the mound for the Phillies this afternoon and battled, tossing seven innings, while allowing only two runs and striking out eight. As is typically the case, Hamels received no run support and therefore was unable to walk away with the win. B.J. Rosenberg tossed a scoreless eighth before Jonathan Papelbon came on for the ninth. Papelbon allowed one hit on his way to a shutout inning, allowing him to pick up the win when the Phillies walked off in the ninth.
Trailing 2 to 0 in the fourth, Darin Ruf launched a solo home run, his eighth of the season, to bring the Phillies within one run. Cody Asche tied things up with a bases loaded groundout in the sixth to score Chase Utley. The Phillies would load the bases in the ninth, as Casper Wells reached on a throwing error by Hanley Ramirez before Carlos Ruiz singled to put runners on the corners with one out. Jimmy Rollins came on to pinch hit and was intentionally walked to load the bases, something that will probably never happen again. With the bases loaded and a chance to take the game and salvage at least a win in the series, Michael Young, king of double plays, was sent to the plate. Young did what many expected, hitting the ball to the shortstop, but Hanley Ramirez made his second error of the inning, handing the Phillies a 3 to 2 victory.
It was the Phillies first game they did not get shut out with Sandberg at the helm and also the first game they notched more than three hits, totaling seven in all. Two players made up for six of those seven hits, as Dom Brown went 2 for 4 and Carlos Ruiz went 4 for 4 on the day.
The Phillies will now welcome the Colorado Rockies to Citizens Bank Park for a four game set. Ethan Martin will take the hill for the Phillies.
