It seems like it has been forever since this could be said, but the Phillies have won their second game in a row. After staking a comfortable lead, the bullpen did what it typically does and helped that lead diminish, but the Phillies held on in the end for a 5 to 4 victory over the Rockies.
Ethan Martin made the start for the Phillies and pitched great, allowing only two runs in six and one-third innings pitched. Justin De Fratus recorded the final two outs in the seventh to keep the Phillies lead at 5 to 2, before Luis Garcia came on in the eighth to allow two runs, while only recording one out. Jake Diekman stopped the bleeding, recording the final two outs in the eighth before handing things over to Jonathan Papelbon in the ninth. Papelbon recorded his 21st save of the season.
The Phillies got on the board in the fourth when Cody Asche grounded into a fielders choice to score Chase Utley. One batter later, John Mayberry Jr. cleared the bases on a three run home run, his ninth of the season. Carlos Ruiz continued to heat up, adding the Phillies fifth run on the game an inning later, on a solo shot, his third of the year. Ruiz added a double as well in the game and the Phillies were able to withstand the Rockies comeback effort and hold on for the win.
The Phillies will face the Rockies again in game two of this four-game set. Tyler Cloyd will take the hill for the Phillies.
