One game remained on the Phillies schedule.
One shot. One opportunity...to not lose 100 games in 2015. On Sunday afternoon, the Phillies would manage to avoid picking up their first 100-loss season since 1961 (when they lost 107 games), picking up a 7-2 win over the Marlins in the season finale. |
The Phillies fell behind in the early going, allowing Dee Gordon to score on a fielding error in the top of the first inning. Gordon would then homer in the third, giving the Marlins a 2-0 lead, as it began to look as if Miami would complete the series sweep and hand the Phillies loss #100.
The Phillies would respond, however, cutting the deficit in half in the fourth on an RBI double by Andres Blanco before knotting the game at 2-2 in the fifth on an RBI double by Aaron Altherr.
The Phillies broke things open in the seventh, taking the lead on a bases loaded walk by Freddy Galvis before Altherr cleared the bases in the next at-bat with a triple.
Things would get interesting in the eighth, when the Marlins brought in Ichiro Suzuki to pitch (Vine below). The Phillies would add an insurance run in the inning on a double by Darnell Sweeney to stretch their lead to 7-2 on their way to picking up their 63rd win of the season.
And so they did it. The Phillies managed to avoid 100 losses in a season that seemed all but destined for it at multiple points.
Final Record: 63-99
The Phillies will also have the #1 overall pick in the 2016 MLB Draft, which should help with the franchise's rebuild. It will be the first time the #Phillies will have the #1 overall pick in the draft since 1998, when they selected Pat Burrell.
