The 76ers journeyed to Atlanta looking to complete their first 3 game winning streak of the season. However that wouldn't be an easy feat against the league-leading Hawks in the midst of an 18 game streak of their own. The Sixers (10-38) had fallen to the Hawks (40-8) in their first two meeting this year and despite taking a late 4th quarter lead, would again be handed a loss. Final Score: 91-85.
Philadelphia had a rough start offensively and fell behind early. After a layup from Nerlens Noel tied the game up at 10 a piece, the Sixers failed to score for the remaining 6+ minutes left in the first quarter and trailed by 12 to start the 2nd period. The 76ers ended the 2nd quarter on an 8-2 run with help from two three-pointers from Hollis Thompson but still went into the halftime break down 49-34.
A big third quarter brought Philadelphia back into the game as they heated up from long range. The Sixers would hit 9 threes in the second half and connected on 14 of 35 overall for the game. A shot from Noel in the closing seconds of the 3rd quarter brought the 76ers within 5 points.
Philly would finally tie it up at 81 off a Mbah a Moute jump shot with 3:19 remaining in the game. A dunk from Noel off a Carter-Williams assist would give the Sixers their first lead with 2:51 left to play. Unfortunately, the 76ers would cool down and Al Horford would help the Hawks retake the lead and close out the game, 91-85.
The Sixers only shot 38% but their three-pointer shooting kept them in it. After shooting so well from the line on Friday against the Timberwolves they only made 9 of their 15 attempts from the charity stripe. Both teams secured 44 rebounds but the Hawks had slight advantages in points in the paint (34-30) turnovers (12-14) while also shooting 44%.
Carter-Williams and Mbah a Moute both scored 13 points for Philly well also recording 2 steals each. MCW also dished out 8 assists and grabbed 6 rebounds. Noel had another impressive performance, recording another double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds while blockign 2 shots. Jerami Grant added 13 points off the bench, hitting all three of his attempts from deep while Thompson hit 4 of 6 from beyond the arc for 12 points.
Horford led the Hawks with 23 points, 11 rebounds, 4 assists, and 3 blocks. Millsap finished with 15 points, 8 boards, and 2 steals. Kyle Korver added 14 points.
The Sixers will play the Cavaliers (29-20) in Cleveland on Monday.
