The 76ers went on the road Saturday night for the second game of a back-to-back with the Cavaliers (2-4). The Sixers came out with the win the night before (94-79) with solid performances from each of the starters. Its always tough to beat a team twice in a row and this game was a nailbiter. The Sixers would fall in double-overtime.
Philadelphia started the game well, grabbing the lead early on a driving layup from Michael Carter-Williams. By the 6:30 mark, the Sixers had already equaled their 1st quarter point total from the night before (14). The Cavaliers were able to take their first lead off a jumper in transition by Dion Waiters as part of an 11-2 run in the 1st. Kyrie Irving played much better for the Cavs in this contest, as Cleveland had the lead for the majority of second quarter.
On a side note, Evan Turner started the game wearing his headband/yarmulke again. Apparently someone told him he was wearing it wrong because he ditched it midway through the second quarter and the Evan Turner that emerged from under that headband had a career night.
Philadelphia was outplayed on the boards for the second night in the row as they gave Cleveland far too many second chances on offense. The 76ers went into the half down 53-48.
The Sixers started the second half well and took the lead after Turner scored 7 points within the first 3 minutes as part of his great 2nd half. Philadelphia held the lead for the remainder of a closely contested 3rd quarter. They shot well in their 37-point quarter, raising their FG% to 51%.
Irving would give Cleveland the league off an And-1 with under 7:00 minutes left. Irving looked unstoppable in the 4th and forced the Sixers to double team him. The Sixers kept it close and cut it to 1 as MCW drove and dished to Hawes under the rim with only :32 left on the clock. Tristan Thompson made only 1 from the line and with :10.5 left, and the ball was inbounded to Thad Young who faced-up and hit the contested driving layup to tie it up. Kyrie Irving's layup at the buzzer rattled out and the game would go into overtime.
Philly failed to score on their first 5 overtime possessions and were down 113-107 with 2:07 remaining. Just as it looked like the Cavs had pulled away, MCW hit a big 3, Turner put-back his own miss, and the Sixers had 3 defensive stops that they needed. Evan Turner then hit an acrobatic layup in Varejao's face to tie it up at 116 with only :8 seconds left. Irving missed his second buzzerbeater as the Sixers defense swarmed him and the game would go into a second overtime.
Both teams looked exhausted and neither team could pull away. With only a minute left, MCW put back his own shot and the Sixers were forced to foul Irving who hit both from the line to stretch their lead to 3. MCW hit an amazing three-point bomb with a hand in his face to tie it. But on his third attempt at a gamewinner, Irving hit the layup with less than a second left.
Evan Turner had a great game finishing with a career-high 31 points while securing 10 rebounds. Thad Young also looked good on both sides of the ball, scoring 29 and swiping 3 steals. It was another wonderful performance for the rookie as MCW had a double-double in regulation and ended with 21 points, 13 boards, and 7 rebounds. He also had 2 steals and 2 blocks.
Kyrie Irving finished with a game-high 39 points and also had 12 assists. Waiters scored 29 and Jack added 20 off the bench.
The Sixers lost a close one on the road, but they looked very good for the majority of the game. They shouldn't take this loss too hard. They play the reigning Western Conference Champion Spurs on Monday in Philly.
