The Sixers opened play in the Orlando summer league over the weekend, facing the Magic on Saturday and the Thunder on Sunday. Nerlens Noel led Philadelphia in a loss against Orlando in his Summer League debut, but would sit(rest) as Philly notched a victory against OKC. Noel, Ronald Roberts Jr., and Casper Ware showed promise in the opening two games but unfortunately PG Pierre Jackson would go down with a ruptured achilles to dampen the excitement a bit.
Noel started his first Summer League game off the right way, scoring the first points of the contest on an explosive up-an-under dunk. Despite the 83-77 loss, the real story was how impressive Noel looked in his first competitive game in over a year. Nerlens scored a game-high 19 points (6-11 FG) and was perfect from the foul line, hitting all 7 attempts. Noel was also recorded 4 steals and 3 assists, but only secured 2 rebounds. The 6'11'' C/PF would rest on Sunday as the coaching staff will be cautious with his playing time as the Sixers are scheduled to play 5 games in 7 days.
An obviously upset Pierre Jackson had to be carried off the court at the end of the first quarter against the Magic as he ruptured his achilles. The 2013 second-round pick was re-acquired during the draft last month after spending most of 2013 tearing up the D-League. The point guard will have to be further evaluated but it looks as though Jackson will not make his NBA debut for some time.
A pleasant surprise for the Sixers came in the form of forward Ronald Roberts Jr. The Saint Joseph's product made his presence and energy felt in both games this past weekend. Roberts Jr. scored 12 points and grabbed 9 boards in 20 minutes against the Magic and had repeat performance with 12 points and 6 rebounds in the win over the Thunder. The 6'8'' forward's motor and intensity could earn him an invite to training camp.
Casper Ware had shoulder most of the load at point guard with Jackson down and out with his injury. Ware stepped up to the plate, especially in the OKC matchup, scoring 20 points on 50% shooting while adding 5 assists and 5 rebounds. Despite his 5'10'' stature, Ware showed some serious leadership and energy on the defensive end.
Hollis Thompson, who played 77 games for Philadelphia last season, recorded 14 rebounds and 5 assists on Saturday but shot poorly, knocking down only 2 of his 11 attempts for 5 points. Thompson sat out with a sore knee in the win over OKC. KJ McDaniels, the first second round pick in this years draft, showed his defensive prowess after being a late add to the roster. McDaniel's blocked and affected shots in both contests and led the team with a plus/minus of +24 through 2 games. The Clemson alum scored 9 points (4-8 FG) in his debut and contributed 13 points and 4 rebounds against OKC.
It was announced on Monday that Iranian Arsalan Kazemi would join the Sixers' Orlando Summer League roster for the remaining games. Philly acquired the rights to the 6'7'' forward during the 2013 draft who made appearances in 5 Summer League games last year. Kazemi played over-seas last year and had been preparing for the FIBA Asia cup with his national team before joining the 76ers. Philly will challenge the Rockets on Monday
