If you came looking for a battle between two of the top NBA teams, you came to the wrong place. The Sixers arrived at Madison Square Garden to play the Knicks Wednesday night for the second meeting between the division-rivals. Both teams came into the game with losing streaks; the 76ers lost their last 3 and the Knicks dropped their last 4. A big game from Evan Turner would lead the Sixers (14-28) to the road win in a close one; 110-106.
The 76ers lost when the Knicks visited Philadelphia earlier in January, 102-92 with an impressive effort by Amare Stoudemire and New York's bench. Stoudemire did not play in this matchup with a sprained ankle. This time, a career-high 34 points from Evan Turner would spark the Sixers and snap their losing streak.
Evan Turner felt it offensively in the first quarter, putting up 10 points in the first 6 minutes. The Sixers jumped out to a 16-9 lead forcing a New York timeout, but Philly could not be slowed down. The 76ers scored 33 points in the opening period on 56% shooting, leading to a 7 point lead. Philadelphia did a great job on the glass in the first half, out-rebounding their opponent 30-16 with 10 offensive rebounds. Carmelo Anthony found his shot in the 2nd, as it appeared the Knicks would start to chip away at Philly's lead. The Sixers were up at halftime 61-56 with 18 points and 4 rebounds from Turner. James Anderson added another 13 first half points (6-7 FG) as Melo led the Knicks with 14 points and 5 assists.
The Knicks hit their first 4 shots to start the 2nd half and tie it up at 65. After a timeout called by Coach Brown, the 76ers got back on track with a pair of steals and hit shots from Thad Young. Philadelphia pushed their lead back up to 8 midway through the quarter. New York closed out the quarter on a short run, but the Sixers still held a slim 4 point lead at the start of the 4th.
JR Smith scored 5 straight to open final quarter and take the lead 85-84 for the first time since the 1st quarter. Going back to the 3rd quarter, the Knicks scored 13 unanswered until snapped by two free throws by Turner. Luckily for Philly, New York's hot streak would not last long and Carter-Williams would re-give his team the lead with a 3-pointer. Both teams shot lights out from downtown; the Sixers hit 9 of 14 while the Knicks connected on 15 of 33 attempts. With 1:47 remaining, Thad Young hit an open three from the top of the arc to push their lead to 5. After a defensive stop, Turner hit a fade-away to all but secure their win, 110-106.
E.T. had scored a career-high 34 points while gathering 12 rebounds for a double-double. Carter-Williams recorded another double-double in his rookie season, scoring 19 points, grabbing 12 boards and dishing out 7 assists. Young finished with 4 steals, 19 points, and 7 rebounds. Anderson added 18 points. Philadelphia won the rebounding battle 54-39 while out-scoring NY 50-26 in the paint.
Carmelo Anthony led the Knicks with 28 points (6-8 3pt), 7 assists, and 4 rebounds. Andrea Bargnani scored 20 points and blocked 4 shots while Iman Shumpert added 19 points and 8 rebounds. Tyson Chandler grabbed 14 rebounds, blocked 3 shots and scored 10 points. The Knicks were a mess defensively and the Sixers took advantage of it.
The Sixers will play the Atlantic-division-leading Raptors (21-20) on Friday in Philadelphia.
