We here at the South Beach Beat pride ourselves on delivering you the most up-to-date Miami sports news. This is why we must admit that we have not delivered as of late. For the entire existence of the blog we have been covering Miami's three major sports teams; the Dolphins, Heats and Mariners. After some reader tips though we have just become aware of the existence of a fourth pro sports team! Who knew? Not us sadly, but that's all about to change. Today marks the beginning of SBB coverage of your Florida Panthers! Read on.
Tonight, the Florida Panthers of the presumably upstart National Hockey League took on the Boston Bruins up in Beantown. Florida entered the contest 4 points out of a wild card birth with only 6 games to play this year. Things went well...then not so well.
Loui Eriksson put the Bruins on the board in the first quarter, but the Panthers Brandon Pirri tied it less than a minute into the second quarter on a power play. Pirri's one timer from the top right circle made its way past a screen and Bruins goalie Ttuukkaa Rraasskk.
Brad Boyes put the Florida hockey club up 2-1 on a breakaway 12 minutes later, but that was the last time the Panthers would hold the lead, crumbling in the third quarter.
Boston's David Pastrnak tipped in a Ryan Spooner shot half way into the third to give him as many goals as he has missing vowels in his last name.
The dagger came with only 1 minute left in the game. Milan Lucic wristed one past Robert Longo despite being converged on by literally all five Panthers ice people. Longo saved 23 of 26 shots on the night, not a terrible number, but definitely not going to get it done.
The Panthers now sit 6 points back of the Boston Bruins for the final wild card spot with just 5 games left to play. Things aren't looking good, but at least we'll have LeBron taking the Heats to the NBA playoffs too look forward too soon.
