The Union entered their match with D.C. United in the fifth and final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference and desperately needing a favorable result with the season winding down. With key players missing in Fabinho and Sheanon Williams, the Union were forced to rearrange the lineup. Although United entered the match as the bottom feeder of the conference, the match would prove to be tough for the Union, with a last minute goal salvaging a 1 -1 tie and a point.
With an already depleted lineup, Sebastien Le Toux was forced to exit the match just 16 minutes in due to plantar fasciitis, further weakening the Union squad. United soon found the back of the net in the 36th minute with a Nick DeLeon goal to take a 1-0 lead at home.
The Union simply could not find the back of the net and looked bound to pick up a bad loss as the season winds down. Then, for the second match in a row, the Union netted a late goal to salvage the game. After winning on a stoppage time goal last week, the Union tied things in the 89th minute on a Jack McInerney header.
The goal was McInerney's first in 17 games and his 11th of the season, moving him into a tie with Conor Casey for the team lead. McInerney would be carded for excessive celebration following the goal, as he ripped off his jersey, but it would make no difference, he had saved the day for the Union, allowing them to escape the match with a crucial point.
The Union now sit in sixth, the first squad out of the playoffs, but are tied in points with fourth place Montreal and fifth place Chicago. The Union will now head to Montreal on October 19, in a crucial match that will most likely determine whether or not they make the playoffs. Two matches remain in the season, time for one last playoff push!
