The Union were absolutely demolished tonight in Massachussets, as the New England Revolution topped them by an embarrassing score of 5 to 1. Despite flat play in the first half, the Union found themselves only trailing 1 to 0 heading to the locker room.
The Union emerged from the locker room looking like a different team from the first half, at least for the first 15 minutes of half number two. The Union got on the board in the 50th minute, as Conor Casey fed Danny Cruz for a beautiful run that ended with Cruz beating the keeper and burying the ball in the back of the net. The Union would threaten again in the next few minutes, having two goals called back, the first for offsides and the second on a weak call by the refs. On the second recalled goal, Conor Casey poked the ball home after the keeper had no possession, but was called for a very weak foul.
From there it was all downhill for the Union. The Revs regained the lead on an Amobi Okugo own goal and things just got worse for the Union. The defense crumbled and sloppy play ended with the Revs scoring three more times in eight minutes to increase their lead to 5 to 1.
The Union tossed away a great opportunity to move up in the Eastern Conference standings. This loss stings and could definitely come back to bite the Union as the playoffs approach. The Union will be back in action on Saturday, as they host the Montreal Impact in a crucial game at PPL Park.
